Jewellery Care Guide

Last updated: September 8, 2026

Your Zebia jewellery is made with care and craftsmanship — with a little care from you, it'll stay beautiful for years to come. Here's how to keep every piece looking its best.

1 General Care Tips

  • Keep it dry: Remove jewellery before showering, swimming, or exercising. Water, chlorine, and sweat can dull plating and weaken settings over time.
  • Last on, first off: Apply perfume, lotion, hairspray, and makeup before putting on your jewellery, and remove your jewellery before washing your hands or face.
  • Avoid chemicals: Keep jewellery away from household cleaning agents, chlorine, and harsh detergents, which can cause discoloration or damage plating.
  • Handle with care: Avoid direct contact with rough surfaces; store pieces separately to prevent scratches and tangling.
  • Wipe after wear: Gently wipe your jewellery with a soft, dry cloth after each use to remove oils, sweat, and residue before storing.

2 Storage Tips

  • Store each piece separately in a soft pouch, jewellery box with compartments, or the original Zebia packaging to prevent scratching and tangling.
  • Keep jewellery in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and humidity.
  • For chains and necklaces, keep them clasped or laid flat to avoid knots and tangles.
  • Avoid storing jewellery in the bathroom or near a window, where moisture and sunlight can accelerate tarnishing.
  • If a piece won't be worn for a while, consider storing it in an airtight pouch or zip-lock bag to minimize air exposure.

3 Cleaning Your Jewellery

Routine cleaning: Gently wipe with a soft, lint-free or microfiber cloth after each wear.

Deeper cleaning (for non-plated, solid metal pieces only — check product details first):

  • Mix a few drops of mild soap with lukewarm water
  • Soak the piece for a few minutes, gently clean with a soft-bristled brush (e.g., an old, clean toothbrush)
  • Rinse carefully and pat dry immediately with a soft cloth

Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaners, or abrasive polishing cloths unless specifically recommended for your piece — these can damage plating, delicate stones, or enamel work.

For plated jewellery specifically: avoid soaking or scrubbing, as this can wear down the plating faster. A gentle wipe with a dry, soft cloth is best.

Always check the care instructions specific to your piece, as cleaning methods can vary by material — gold-plated, sterling silver, brass, or gemstone-studded jewellery may need different care.

4 Category-Specific Care

Earrings & Nose Pins

  • Clean gently around posts/backs where oils and product buildup can collect.
  • Avoid sleeping in earrings to reduce pressure on settings and skin irritation.

Rings

  • Remove before activities involving hand contact — washing dishes, gardening, workouts, or applying hand cream.
  • Be mindful of impacts against hard surfaces, which can loosen stone settings over time.

Bangles & Bracelets

  • Put on and remove carefully to avoid bending or scratching, especially for cuff-style or adjustable pieces.
  • Avoid stacking multiple metal bangles that can scratch each other — store separately when possible.

Necklaces & Pendants

  • Unclasp before removing to avoid stress on the clasp and chain.
  • Store flat or hung to prevent tangling and kinking of delicate chains.

Anklets & Waist Chains

  • Remove before swimming, bathing, or vigorous exercise, as these are more exposed to sweat and friction.
  • Check clasps periodically for wear, given the higher movement these pieces experience.

Arm Cuffs

  • Handle gently when adjusting the fit — avoid repeated wide bending, which can weaken the metal over time.

5 What to Avoid

  • Wearing jewellery in the shower, pool, or sea
  • Spraying perfume or hairspray directly onto jewellery
  • Sleeping or exercising while wearing delicate pieces
  • Using toothpaste, baking soda, or harsh chemical cleaners
  • Storing multiple pieces tangled together in one pouch
  • Exposing jewellery to direct sunlight or extreme temperatures for long periods
  • Attempting repairs, resizing, or polishing at unauthorized/local jewellers (this may void your warranty)

6 Understanding Natural Wear

Plating fade: Gold/rhodium plating naturally wears thinner with regular use over time — this is expected and not a manufacturing defect. Following the care tips above will help extend its life.

Gemstone variation: Natural or semi-precious stones may have minor inclusions or slight color variations — this is part of their natural character, not a flaw.

Tarnishing: Sterling silver may naturally tarnish with air exposure; regular gentle cleaning helps maintain its shine.
